R.E.M. play on Mars - As history is made, little green men give thumbs up

R.E.M. were always destined to go far - but the farthest reaches of the solar system probably never figured in Michael Stipe's plans.

Even so, the strains of the Athens band were heard on the Red Planet for the very first time this morning as Nasa's Opportunity rover was woken up by 1988 single Stand blaring out from its robotic alarm clock.
The second of the space agency's two explorers - which are wondering the planet's rocky surface, taking environmental samples and looking for traces of water - is woken up each Martian morning by a song picked by scientists back on Earth.

On Sol - or day - 64 at 1:22 a.m. PST (early by anyone's standards) solar-powered Opportunity awoke from its overnight slumber, hearing: "If you are confused check with the sun". Looks like those Nasa bods have a sense of humour.

After being rudely awoken by messrs Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe, Opportunity had an exciting day ahead planned - having its on-board memory remotely tweaked by engineers to fix a computer error and investigating a rock they earlier dubbed "Bounce" for the location where it first bounced out of the red sky to land on Mars.
